We are all in this together

Individualistic, zero-sum thinking is what got us here in the first place

Update : 02 Dec 2023, 09:14 AM

The announcement of the much-heralded loss and damage fund for climate devastated countries in COP28 is sure to go down in history as a major stepping stone towards putting an end to the climate crisis.

While there is still much to be done, with very little time to do it -- a fact cemented by 2023 being the hottest year on record -- this recent win does paint a more optimistic picture for the future.

The fund in question would be allocated for less developed countries which have had negligible contributions towards global carbon emissions but have suffered the most from the consequence of climate change. What’s more is that these countries generally don’t have the financial capability to rectify the effects of these consequences, meaning, without assistance, they will be eradicated for something they have neither done nor have benefitted from.

This is why this historic fund is so important. Aside from strengthening international cooperation, it ensures the future of nations that don’t have the means for surviving what is about to come. What we have to remember is that we are all in this together, ensuring that we all survive together is an important element of fighting climate change. Individualistic, zero-sum thinking is what got us here in the first place, so we need to change that. To that end, this win at COP28 has been a long-time coming.

We must keep this momentum going. Such common-sense victories need to be prioritized, and we need to focus on cutting down global emissions through deeper collaboration.

Again, we are all in this together. Let’s make sure to remember that.
