Attack on political representatives cannot become the norm

These attacks on the homes and premises of political representatives must be condemned

Update : 29 Nov 2023, 11:58 PM

Just last week, this newspaper editorialized that if citizens are resorting to physical attacks on political leaders, that is where we must draw the line as a nation, for it is a threat to the very foundations of our nation beyond endangering the safety of individual political leaders.

Since then, two crude bombs exploded at the house of Bogra unit BNP’s former women's affairs secretary, several crude bombs exploded in front of the residence of Sitakunda upazila unit Awami League president, and earlier, a crude bomb exploded at the premises of Dhaka court after the bail hearing of BNP Secretary General Mirza.

Suffice to say, this is becoming a dangerous trend.

It is truly disheartening to see political animosity reach such a stage where people are feeling the need to try and cause physical harm to political leaders and representatives. Such actions have no place in dignified society, and are bringing shame to the nation.

It is imperative that the authorities identify these miscreants and bring them to justice -- the longer they evade the law, the more emboldened they and others who may be encouraged by such actions become.

Elections bring about disagreements, and it has been disappointing to see the animosity spill over to where it is truly hurting the nation. At such a time, we not only need cooler heads to prevail, but also initiative from those in charge to remove miscreants who are quite literally adding fuel to a volatile flame.

As such, for the reputation and overall health of our nation, these attacks on the homes and premises of political representatives must be condemned, and all miscreants responsible for them be brought to book immediately.
