Unrest hurting the nation

Recognize the detrimental effects of prolonged unrest on the nation's economic fabric

Update : 17 Nov 2023, 01:16 PM

In recent times, Bangladesh has found itself grappling with a wave of unrest and while peaceful demonstrations should never be silenced, what is transpiring has been anything but peaceful. These are not only shaking the foundations of governance, but perhaps more worryingly, are also having a severe detrimental impact on the business landscape.

Nowhere is this more apparent than the RMG industry, which continues to see workers and business owners at loggerheads over wages. However, this has resulted in over $100 million worth of garment work orders to be postponed, owing to the latest spell of labour unrest and vandalism.

The thriving business environment in Bangladesh is now shadowed by uncertainty and this is having an impact on investors, both domestic and international, who may adopt a cautious stance, hesitant to commit resources in the face of instability.

And for a nation that is banking on investment, both local and international, to propel its economy to the next level, this is a worrying sign.

Small and medium enterprises, which are the lifeblood of Bangladesh's economy, find themselves particularly vulnerable during these tumultuous times. As the private sector struggles to navigate this uncertain terrain, it is the everyday worker who often bears the consequences.

Most importantly, the ripple effect of the current turmoil extends beyond national borders, diminishing Bangladesh's reputation as a stable investment destination. Foreign direct investment, a key driver of economic progress, is deterred by the perception of such instability, threatening our future economic development.

It is imperative for all stakeholders, both political and public, to recognize the detrimental effects of prolonged unrest on the nation's economic fabric. The nation stands at a crossroads, and the onus is on our leaders to prioritize the greater good, putting the interests of the nation above all else.
