Breathing in death

Our collective future depends on the actions we take today

Update : 28 Sep 2023, 11:23 AM

Bangladesh’s issues with air pollution have been well documented and a recent study from University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute tells us just how dire the situation continues to be for our nation. As per the Air Quality Life Index 2023, the life expectancy of an average Bangladeshi is cut short by 6.8 years due to fine particle air pollution - a number that is simply not acceptable.

And this is no surprise; from respiratory illnesses to cardiovascular diseases, the impact of polluted air on our people is undeniable. The consequences of air pollution also extend beyond just health issues. Polluted air contributes to the degradation of our ecosystems, harming agriculture, and threatening our biodiversity. And much like most issues, this disproportionately affects vulnerable communities.

Month after month and year after year, we continue to ring alarm bells with regard to our worsening air quality and yet, it appears that little to no action is being undertaken to address what can only be described as among the most critical issues for our population. There is no justification for the population of a nation losing 10% of their life expectancy to a problem that, while challenging to eliminate, has viable solutions to reduce.

We cannot afford to downplay the urgency of this issue any longer. To mitigate the dire consequences of air pollution, Bangladesh must prioritize a multifaceted approach to crack down on the biggest culprits, which have been unchecked urbanization and a culture of impunity that allows powerful entities to continue to get away with their operations with zero accountability - threatening our very existence as a nation.

Our collective future depends on the actions we take today to curb air pollution and create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Bangladesh.
