Safeguarding our marine ecosystem

Investing in research and technology is crucial to harnessing these resources sustainably

Update : 22 Sep 2023, 09:13 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signing the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) to protect the world's oceans and rivers is yet another sign that Bangladesh is serious about employing sustainable means when it comes to marine resources; it shows the rest of the world that despite being a climate-vulnerable nation, we remain firmly committed to sustainable growth.

Marine resources in recent years have faced exponential damage due to the fragile marine environment as a result of overfishing and other human activities. To say it is imperative that more nations come together to check this issue is at this point a gross understatement.

The ocean offers a treasure trove of opportunities for our nation's economic growth and recognizing the importance of sustainable usage of these marine resources could act as a catalyst for our economic development. The Bay of Bengal presents opportunities for offshore oil and gas exploration. Properly managed, this sector could yield substantial revenues for Bangladesh, further strengthening our economy. And we must do so while striking a balance between resource extraction and environmental preservation.

Investing in research and technology is crucial to harnessing these resources sustainably. Advanced technologies can improve efficiency, monitor environmental conditions, and enhance resource management. Additionally, we must continue to engage in international collaborations to protect these valuable resources.

Bangladesh's marine resources are a source of immense economic potential. While tempting, it is good to see that it is sustainable usage that has been identified as the key to unlocking these benefits -- development works best while we are simultaneously safeguarding our environment.
