Investing in skills development a necessity

Bangladesh stands at a crucial juncture in its development journey

Update : 22 Sep 2023, 09:13 AM

There is no questioning the fact that we have made significant strides in various sectors over the past decade and a half. From the thriving ready-made garment industry to the burgeoning technology and services sector, the country's potential for economic growth remains undeniable.

However, to continue its journey towards prosperity, Bangladesh must prioritize upskilling its labour force. To that end, we are pleased to learn that Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) are coming together to to help send skilled workers to Malaysia, one of the largest job markets for Bangladeshi workers - hopefully the first of many such partnerships that can help send more skilled workers to other nations.

Bangladesh's overseas employment sector is indeed identified and promoted as a cheap labour-sending sector all over the world - and this is the narrative that we must change if we are to be taken seriously as an economy, especially as we become a more prosperous nation.

Skilled workers are the backbone of any thriving economy. They not only contribute to higher productivity but also enable innovation and adaptability in a rapidly changing world. For Bangladesh to take the next leap in its development journey, investing in skill development is not an option; it's a necessity.

Skilled workers are not just more efficient; they can also adapt to new technologies and processes, driving innovation and enhancing the country's reputation. Moreover, they can attract foreign investment. Companies looking to set up operations in Bangladesh are more likely to invest when they find a skilled workforce readily available.

Bangladesh stands at a crucial juncture in its development journey. The path to prosperity lies in the hands of a skilled and adaptable workforce, and it's time for Bangladesh to embrace this imperative for the betterment of all its citizens.
