To graduation and beyond

Bangladesh's imminent graduation from the status of a least developed country (LDC) is undoubtedly a momentous achievement in our journey towards economic and social development.

And as we fast approach this milestone, it is essential to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for our nation and the role that developed nations, such as the US, can play in assisting Bangladesh's continued progress.

To that end, it was encouraging to hear Brendan Lynch, the (acting) assistant US trade representative for South and Central Asia, showing optimism about the United States' support regarding Bangladesh's economic growth after its LDC graduation.

The loss of certain trade privileges that will come with LDC status means we must focus on diversifying our economy, enhancing competitiveness, and addressing key vulnerabilities. Investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare will be crucial in sustaining our growth momentum.

The role of developed nations in this process cannot be underestimated. The US, as a global economic powerhouse, can extend support through trade agreements, foreign direct investment, and technical assistance.

However, from our end, as stated by Brendan Lynch, one way to ensure that Bangladesh remains competitive even after graduating would be for Bangladesh to focus on labour law reform, especially with respect to freedom of association, collective bargaining, and unfair labour practices.

And of course, there is no alternative to good governance, transparency, and rule of law. Developed nations can play a pivotal role in strengthening institutions, promoting democratic values, and encouraging accountability within Bangladesh's governance structures, and we hope our recent focus on strengthening ties with other nations continues. The lessons learned from other nations that have successfully transitioned from LDC status should also guide our policies and actions.

As we embark on a new chapter post-LDC graduation, it is crucial that Bangladesh continues to prioritize inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and social development. LDC graduation is just the first of many ambitions we hold, and we must leave no stone unturned to ensure we fulfil each and every one.
