Reviving the golden fibre is a golden opportunity

To unlock the full potential of jute, we must adopt a comprehensive strategy

Update : 14 Sep 2023, 02:14 AM

It is a crying shame how Bangladesh, despite its meme success stories, has utterly failed in certain endeavours, with its failure to utilize the jute industry being among the most prominent.

To that end, we sympathize with the Bangladesh Jute Growers and Traders Association who urged the government on Monday to reopen at least 10 jute mills that were closed three years ago due to recurring losses.

In fact, that around 300 officers and employees from 26 jute mills have been receiving salaries every month for three and a half years without performing any work is testament to how broken the entire industry truly is.

Once a cornerstone of our economy, the jute industry has faced years of neglect, but it is about time we consider a serious revival. With increasing global demand for eco-friendly and biodegradable materials, jute is perfectly poised to make a comeback.

Reviving the jute industry aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability. We can reduce our carbon footprint and showcase Bangladesh as a champion of sustainable practices on the global stage.

However, to unlock the full potential of jute, we must adopt a comprehensive strategy. This starts with political will and prioritizing cracking down on corruption and malpractices that have held this industry back for far too long.

The time has come for Bangladesh to reclaim its position as the global leader in jute production and innovation. Together, we can turn this golden opportunity into a reality.
