A job to be done

A lot more needs to be done to ensure the overall unemployment rate

Update : 02 Aug 2023, 05:17 PM

It is good to see that the unemployment rate in Bangladesh has gone down, not only since this period last year, but has also amounted to a significant fall from the first quarter of this year.

According to data collected by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), unemployment decreased by 3.47% in the April-June quarter from the previous quarter this year, with 90,000 fewer unemployed individuals recorded in just three months.

Further numbers show a 2.34% decline in unemployment from the April-June quarter last year, with 2.34% and 5.68% drops in male and female unemployment respectively.

It is especially significant as the rate had experienced a significant increase earlier this year from the last quarter of 2022.

This is, undoubtedly, promising news. A sweeping proportion of our population has been battling joblessness for a number of years, and we have been unable to efficiently utilize the resources that Bangladesh evidently has an abundance of.

Just a few years ago, Bangladesh ranked second in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of unemployment rate, and it is encouraging to see a pressing problem, slowly but surely, be rectified over time.

While this is a positive development, a lot more needs to be done to ensure the overall unemployment rate -- currently standing at 2.5 million -- is brought down to a minimum in the foreseeable future.

For this to be an achievable reality, the obvious disconnect between the demand in the job market and the number of eligible workers must be reduced, with our education system and vocational training opportunities matching that needs of the economy and by creating more jobs accordingly.

The relevant authorities must continue to identify and resolve these discrepancies to ensure unemployment can be a thing of the past for Bangladesh.
