The recent political actions, be they elections or marches, despite the lion's share of proceedings being peaceful, have nonetheless seen certain sections of the opposition and ruling party clash across the country.
Moreover, it is also disappointing to see that we have not been able to keep the violence away, with at least one life being lost in the recent clashes across the country, with dozens injured.
What is most distressing however, is that in the midst of the clashes are always the civilians who just want to go about their way, and have to face the consequences for the actions of the political parties.
From bringing our already terrible traffic to a complete standstill and subsequently disrupting the lives and routines of millions of citizens to people fearing for their general safety, it is unfortunate that when it comes to politics, we remain so far behind in often doing right by the people of this country.
Law enforcement must be more pro-active in ensuring that the situation does not spiral out of control as it so often does, while our political parties must also recognize the adverse impact some of these processions have on the everyday lives of Bangladeshi citizens.
In addition, no one should also be above the law, and regardless of who is responsible, the law enforcement agencies have a duty to hold them accountable and do what is necessary.
If we are indeed to be a democracy that is worth celebrating, then all of our political organizations must do a much better job of recognizing the ramifications of their actions. It is the people of Bangladesh who suffer most when our politics gets ugly and we hope that all leaders can recognize this moving forward.
