One of the most uplifting news among all the development projects is the increasingly frequent updates on the progress of the metro rail construction, which is set to conduct another test run on Sunday.
It is satisfying news for the public that the metro rail project is speeding ahead, and the moment when Dhaka’s commute system will achieve this major upgrade is nearing. And with the metro rail system in place, Dhaka will finally begin to have an inter-city commuting structure that is modern and able to cater to the needs of the constantly growing population of the city.
The overall progress of construction work for the 21.26-kilometre elevated metro rail service -- going from Uttara to Motijheel-Kamalapur Railway Station -- stands currently at 72.99%.
Previously, the metro rail made its first official performance test atop the viaducts from the Diabari depot to the Mirpur 12 transit service on August 29. The second performance test was done on November 29 between Uttara and Mirpur 10. And now the third performance test on Sunday will be run from Uttara’s Diabari to Agargaon route.
It is also a happy development that the authorities are now aiming to open the route from Uttara to Agargaon by December 2022, instead of the initial goal of completion by 2024, for which the administration deserves applause.
Equally commendable is the government’s serious approach towards security within the metro rail area, not only in providing a separate police unit for metro rail but also in its effort to properly train all the related personnel.
It is very reassuring that all of the rail operators are set to receive training abroad before being appointed to duty by August 2022. Currently, 36 operators are getting training abroad, having first completed an array of training in the country.
We congratulate the government for its continuing success with the metro rail project. At this rate, the public will be enjoying the fruits of their labour in no time.
