It is good to see the government seems to be taking notice of the dire situations of our rivers, as it is working on a plan to clean up the five rivers surrounding Dhaka, while also taking steps to protect them from encroachment.

Bangladesh’s rivers have been in a dire situation for a while now. Just this month, one of our waterways was contaminated with 30,000 litres of oil. If one takes a journey by the waterways, one would be astonished to see the number of factories set along the edges of the rivers, all dumping their pollutants in the water.

Then comes the issue of river encroachment. This has been such a common problem and so many people have become victims to this that it has become a daily part of our national lives. We lose so much due to river erosion, and yet, there has been little attempt to do anything about it.

That’s why it is good to see the government taking up such a plan. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Economic Relations Division (ERD), and the World Bank are working closely on this. We can and must expect them to do a thorough job, and hold them accountable for any delays to their task.

As is often the case, many projects only see the planning stage without implementation, and we cannot afford for this to be one of them. Relevant timelines have to be set up, and they have to consistently be met. Measures have to be set up to ensure proper accountability and any kind of corruption has to be struck down with swift justice.

Little by little, our rivers have been dying. Let’s make sure that they are saved.
