Whatever it is that the government is planning -- be it full-blown legislation or new guidelines -- it has to address the fundamental needs most urgently.
It is very encouraging to see that the need for burn units and drug rehabs at all district-level hospitals is being addressed. Burn patients often need immediate intervention, and travelling long distances can be the difference between life and death, or recovery and permanent damage.
Drug rehabilitation units are also important, as approximately 7.5 million people -- 80% of whom are youth -- suffer from drug addiction. The drug rehab units also need to have quality service, a lack of which is a consistent problem in Bangladesh's health sector. Studies show that the effectiveness of drug rehab treatments heavily depends on the environment and management of the rehab centres.
With the need for constant government efforts to improve accessibility and quality, these new measures are important and welcome developments toward better public health in Bangladesh. The country just needs to keep on heading towards the direction it has taken.
