ED: From trash to treasure

Bangladesh aims at electricity from waste by 2023

Update : 07 Dec 2023, 03:33 PM

As Bangladesh moves forward in its development journey, what will ensure that we remain on the upward trajectory are innovative ideas and plans that are able to transform an adverse situation into a positive one.

To that end, it is encouraging to see that the Matuail Sanitary Landfill authorities are planning to build an eco town as part of its initiative to clean up and expand the landfill.

It is no secret that Bangladesh’s current waste management is in shambles; simply dumping waste into landfills, without any planning or thought put into what is being dumped is retrograde and is not the marker of a progressive nation, with progressive ideologies.

Instead, what is now being proposed for the Matuail Sanitary Landfill -- the building of an eco town with an intermediate treatment zone with facilities for recycling, biogas production, composting, and other methods of converting waste to energy -- appears to be the way forward.

However, there are already experts who have voiced concerns over the feasibility of this project, and thus, the authorities concerned must go over every minute detail of this plan and ensure that the vast monetary resources that will be required for a project of this magnitude is not in vain. Too often in Bangladesh, we have seen that grand plans are drawn up without considering the practicality of these projects, and ultimately, it is taxpayer money that is down the drain.

Thus, while the project is ambitious and forward-thinking, a healthy dose of scepticism is necessary, and only when this plan, or any other plan is foolproof should it be greenlit.
