Building on our ICT promise

We cannot afford to be left behind

Update : 19 Jun 2023, 12:01 PM

Bangladesh's burgeoning ICT sector has long shown promise of becoming even greater. With exports amounting to $1.4 billion in the previous fiscal year and the emergence of tech-based startups filling many gaps -- infrastructural and otherwise -- which have existed in our country for years, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Bangladesh is well on track to meeting its overall goals of transforming into a truly smart nation.

With Sweden's recent expression of interest to collaborate with Bangladesh when it comes to the ICT sector, the possibilities are now endless.

From Klarna to Spotify, Sweden houses some of the biggest companies working in the global ICT industry, with 41% of the entire Nordic ICT market being dominated by Sweden. The fact that such a major player in global ICT has taken an interest in Bangladesh is a testament to our stellar track record in this sector.

All of this is especially important considering the fact that the world is on the verge of the fourth industrial revolution -- which is set to herald a drastic transformation in the adoption of technology when it comes to industry. As a country, we cannot afford to be left behind.

However, given the government's current Smart Bangladesh initiative is now in full swing, it is time that our ICT sector reaped the benefits in order to scale up operations and scope. As long as we can maintain and build on this momentum and build on the collaborative approach of the public and private sector, Bangladesh has nowhere to go but up.
