Expanding our migrant worker base

Creating a greater migrant worker force, especially under legally sound arrangements, can ensure a stronger revenue base

Update : 08 Jun 2023, 09:59 PM

As we advance towards stronger ties with other nations, it is good to see that various avenues of cooperation are being explored with our allies. A case in point is the improved bilateral migration being discussed between Bangladesh and Italy.

In a recent Political Consultations event between representatives of both nations, the secretary general of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation relayed their nation's interest in taking skilled workers from Bangladesh for the construction, ship-building, and hospitality sectors.

At present, under the Flussi Decree, 46% of the work permits granted to non-European workers are held by Bangladeshis, and it is promising that Italy is willing to take in even more of our workers under improved migration and mobility arrangements.

This is a crucial step for our country. The Bangladesh economy is heavily dependent on its expat income, and creating a greater migrant worker force, especially under legally sound arrangements, can ensure a stronger revenue base for us in the long run.

It is important, therefore, that these discussions are brought to fruition, and also that the safety and fair treatment of our overseas workers is guaranteed.

Italy and Bangladesh have shared a friendly relationship for decades, and discussions as such are the right way forward at this stage of our development. Deepened ties and increased partnership with our allies -- existing and new -- will undoubtedly be pivotal to our further growth as a nation.

Bangladesh has an abundance of resources, our skilled labour being one of them, and only through the proper employment of all that is available to us can we even begin to reach our true potential.
