Biman Bangladesh has been in a downward spiral for years now. From failure to utilize the current Biman fleet to its full potential to rampant corruption and bureaucratic inefficiency, our national carrier needs to make sweeping structural changes if it wants to compete as a modern, profitable venture.
Unfortunately, with authorities formulating a plan to expand its fleet size without proper research, it seems that such bizarre decision making will continue for years to come.
Biman has put forward a plan to expand its fleet size to 45 from the existing 21, more than double of its current capacity. The plan is to increase the number of flights on both international and domestic routes. However, there has been zero market research on the proposed routes to assess existing and potential market demands. Furthermore, Biman Bangladesh has failed to present revenue plans, fund figures, or any kind of analysis for crew recruitment.
Essentially, Biman Bangladesh has failed to come up with any kind of business plan that justifies such outrageous spending. Without proper planning and market research, such spending always turns to waste.
This cannot go on.
Such wasteful ways of thinking is simply further proof that Biman should be privatized without delay. Despite being in the business for 50 years, Biman is still plagued by a raft of issues including, but not limited to, ticketing mismanagement, poor passenger service, lack of flight schedule and fleet planning, and inefficient human resource management. Lumping wasteful spending on top of these existing problems would absolutely push circumstances over the edge.
Biman must either survive and prosper on its own merits or be closed down.
