A healthy partnership with Saudi Arabia

Strategic partnerships with other nations near and far are among the best ways we will be able to maintain our growth

Update : 05 May 2023, 06:35 AM

It is a matter of pride for Bangladesh to be chosen as the first country for Saudi Arabia to implement its newly introduced e-visas - from now on, Bangladeshi nationals will not need to get a sticker visa of any category.

This is particularly useful for the vast number of expat workers in the kingdom, providing a huge boost to not only them but the recruiting agencies and reducing hassle, cost, and time to get Saudi visas.

It is a shame how, despite all that our expat workers do for our nation, we are unable to support them, particularly in the host nations where they are often subjected to harassment and hassle. While the issuance of an e-visa to Saudi Arabia - among the most popular destinations for our expat workers - is a step in the right direction, more needs to be done for their safety and welfare.

Moreover, with Bangladesh chosen by Saudi Arabia as the first nation to roll out the e-visas, it is safe to say that Saudi Arabia is a nation that is keen to work with Bangladesh. This is an opportunity that must not be lost, and we expect the appropriate channels to ensure that we are indeed able to boost our existing relationship with the kingdom - not only in terms of our expat workers, but other avenues as well.

Ultimately, with Bangladesh soon to graduate from its status as a least developed country (LDC) to a middle-income economy, it will lose many of the perks afforded to LDCs and as such, must find ways to not let it dent our growth.

Strategic partnerships with other nations near and far are among the best ways we will be able to maintain our growth. Strengthening our relationship with Saudi Arabia, especially in the wake of their recent actions, is only rational.
