Bangladesh's progress, especially as it occurred in the 2010s, cannot be denied and we have every reason to be proud of what we have achieved as a nation.
Despite the shocks of the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, we have remained steady, and credit must be given to the authorities concerned for navigating an incredibly challenging time for our nation.
Among Bangladesh's most notable achievements has been its emphasis on poverty reduction, and it is encouraging to see the the latest Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES), conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), reflect this- poverty rate in Bangladesh dropped to 18.7% in the last six years.
While this is of course, extremely good news and a fitting result to all the work done not just by those in power, but countless organizations and individuals, this is only just the beginning.
While we have rightfully received plaudits for our efforts with regard to poverty reduction, the Covid-19 pandemic has unfortunately resulted in millions of new poor in the country, and it is imperative that we continue the trend of seeing reduced poverty each and every year as we march towards our economic goals.
Moreover, while we see poverty reduction, it is a matter of concern that the same survey sees inequality increasing in Bangladesh. This should not be taken lightly -- it is only through shared prosperity and inclusive growth will we truly become the nation we want to be. Yes, we want to become a smart, developed Bangladesh by 2041, but above all else, we must prioritize becoming an equitable Bangladesh.
