It is a matter of concern that the prices of essential items in Bangladesh continue to rise exponentially, even defying the pricing standards of other countries.
Basic food items like rice, sugar, and beef are becoming increasingly expensive, which is not only worrisome for the general public, but also disallows people below average wage levels to purchase all their necessities.
Reports suggest that the prices of many essential items are higher than in the global market, and do not decline despite price drops internationally.
This is an issue that requires immediate attention and action.
Bangladesh relies substantially on imports for many of its basic needs, and thus tax rates contribute to the already higher prices we are made to pay.
To that end, considering the threat that global inflation poses, it is imperative that the authorities take active measures to reduce the taxes and duties on said products, in order to bring prices down to feasible levels.
A large portion of our population earns a minimum wage, and extreme price hikes -- especially on essential food items -- have left more of them incapable of buying, and consuming, what they need, leading to a worsened state of living.
We cannot let this happen. The well-being of our people is on the line; we must ensure that prices of essential goods are maintained at a level that does not exclude marginalized groups of people.
Equity must remain a priority for Bangladesh, as it advances to greater heights of development. Those with lower income levels must not be denied their right to essential goods, and it is the duty of our government to ensure that.
