The long-awaited Dhaka Metro Rail was inaugurated on Wednesday by the prime minister, marking a historic event for the nation. The highly anticipated metro rail has been a major project for Bangladesh, and its successful launch is certainly reason to celebrate.
The metro rail -- which is designed to carry 700 to 800 passengers when operating in full capacity -- is expected to use 160MW of electricity to run per day. However, in the initial stages, the metro rail will operate on a limited scale, lowering the expected electricity consumption.
According to reports, an adequate supply of electricity has been ensured by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), and is expected to provide uninterrupted power till 2050. An Energy Storage System (ESS) has also been arranged to provide back-up power for the metro rail to operate seamlessly.
This is undoubtedly the kind of long-term planning that can make our country's dream project a success.
As we embark upon a new chapter of our nation's development, especially with a project of this magnitude, it is absolutely imperative to map out all possible scenarios and alternatives to ensure maximum efficiency and consistent services for the public.
That the authorities are starting off on a limited scale is confirmation of their dedication to put a feasible system in place. The trial phase of the metro rail will provide an opportunity for the authorities to iron out the kinks, and with pro-active measures and efficient maintenance, our country stands to gain a successful and sustainable transport system.
For a long time, the government has worked diligently with relevant authorities to make this dream project a reality. As long as we remain consistent in our efforts to build the best possible metro rail system, we can hope to board the train to further progress in the near future.
