Start-ups on the up

Start-ups are particularly important for Bangladesh at this stage of its journey

Update : 22 Dec 2022, 12:39 AM

Congratulations are in order for Bangladeshi transport-tech startup Shuttle, which has recently announced a further $1.5 million in new funding which brings its total investment to $2.5 million to date.

It is also very encouraging to see that this round of funding -- which was led by South Asia Tech, a growth stage venture capital fund focused on logistics and e-commerce startups in South Asia -- also had the government's venture capital fund Startup Bangladesh Limited as one of the investors, which shows that not only is the government invested quite literally in the venture, but the government is also serious about funding start-ups which show promise.

Bangladesh is fast closing in on becoming a middle-income nation, and to that effect, it is absolutely vital that it cultivates a culture where its industries can thrive and prosper.

Start-ups are particularly important for Bangladesh at this stage of its journey as a nation; not only do they promise incredible returns if they are successful in scaling up, as we have seen with companies like Bkash and Pathao, but additionally, they bring fresh perspectives and ideas, with the potential to transform the overall business culture of the country.

Bangladesh has long spoken of establishing a culture of innovation and risk-taking and embodying a leapfrogging mindset that will propel the nation; indeed, if we are to indeed become a prosperous and developed nation in less than two decades, there is no alternative to forging this path.

When start-ups like Shuttle are able to secure funding, it is the entirety of Bangladesh that gains. We can only hope that the momentum of our start-ups continues, and they play a major role in transforming Bangladesh for the better.
