Along with the rest of the world, Bangladesh is still very clearly reeling from the global economic turbulence brought along primarily by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine among other international incidents. The economic fallout has resulted in perhaps one of the steepest global recessions in recent memory, one that is affecting people in our own country across various social strata.
However, none are more affected than the underprivileged and low-income households in Bangladesh, who often find it difficult to get by even when the economy is relatively healthy. For them, every taka counts.
While the government’s various initiatives to keep the prices of essentials in check have had a considerably positive effect in low-income households being able to afford such items, giving 10 million families the choice to purchase such items at subsidized prices has been particularly noteworthy.
This is the way to go.
It says a lot that the only way Bangladesh’s continued economic progress can be impacted is through the ill-conceived machinations of other nations which bear ramifications for the entire world.
As Bangladesh continues its upward trajectory to middle income status, we must all remember that a nation is only as developed as the lowest rungs of its socioeconomic ladder as it is more indicative of the baseline quality of life for most citizens. To give credit where it's due, the government has clearly kept this in cognizance.
Of course, while these safety nets are much needed, equally important is to ensure that the practice of unfair price gouging is not only reined in but that offenders are also brought to book.
