Ushering in a new era of energy

Embracing renewable energy is the best option

Update : 02 Sep 2022, 10:03 PM

As the world at large, and Bangladesh as a consequence, experiences the ongoing energy crisis, one thing is certain: If we are to sustain the trajectory of our progress, we will need to find newer and more innovative ways of generating energy in addition to traditional sources.

To that effect, it is encouraging to hear State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Thursday say that various initiatives have been taken to increase the stake of renewable energy sources in Bangladesh.

Of course, while energy generation is top of the mind currently, we must not forget the devastating effects of climate change, and the disproportionate adverse effects it is having on a country such as ours -- one that has done little to contribute to the mess humanity finds itself in now.

Yet, it is good to see talks of research on producing energy from renewable energy sources; solar, wind, and water, while also keeping in mind more ambitious initiatives like generating power from waste as exploring hydrogen fuel as a possible option.

This is the kind of forward-thinking planning we want to see from the authorities. Despite not contributing to climate change, Bangladesh embracing renewable energy as a viable alternative shows that we remain conscious of climate change, and are doing everything that we can to generate power from alternative, renewable sources.

Indeed, diversification shall also be key; in an increasingly volatile world starved for power, Bangladesh’s best chances of keeping up are to explore any and all avenues for energy generation. Not only is this good for us, but embracing renewable energy is ultimately the best option we have for saving our planet.
