Our country has been sheltering and taking care of the refugees ever since Myanmar ramped up their ethnic cleansing operations back in 2017.
The situation was always untenable, and the only feasible and long-term solution for the persecuted group of people has always been their eventual repatriation into their homeland. As such, it is good to hear that Japan is now seeking to assist Bangladesh in the efforts to that end.
The Rohingya crisis has been one of the biggest issues not just within the context of the region, but as a global crisis. A huge influx of Rohingya people were forced to leave their homes in Myanmar by their own government and army which led to their dispersal.
Bangladesh did the right thing and intervened right before something even worse happened to them, offering them shelter until the world realized Myanmar’s crimes and worked towards their repatriation. Such an event clearly hasn’t panned out yet.
The silence that can be seen from the international community is deafening, and only a handful of nations have shown support towards getting the Rohingya back to their homeland safe and sound. With Japan’s recent words of support, it seems like Bangladesh will no longer remain alone in its quest for justice.
Bangladesh has shown grit and determination in taking care of the Rohingya for so long. To reiterate, the only feasible solution here is repatriation. We need more nations to speak out not just against the atrocities that the Myanmar junta has committed against their own people, but facilitate the safe and secure repatriation of the Rohingya.
They have suffered far too long.
