A month of restraint

Once again, the holy month of Ramadan is upon us

Update : 03 Apr 2022, 01:01 AM

It is a month of restraint, of reflection, and of taking into account the core tenets of Islam for Muslims all around the world.

The past year has been just as difficult, if not more so, as the one before. As the Covid-19 pandemic continued its rampage across the world, Muslims understood that physical congregation is not the only means for us to remain a community. Even at a distance, we are truly one as a people.

Of course, even though the pandemic is slowly starting to subside, we must still practice the same restraint with which this holiest of months is celebrated and maintain distance.

Ramadan calls out to us to leave behind our undesirable habits, and cultivate better ones through silent devotion that brings us closer to Allah. We must shun violence in any form it manifests and preach peace at every turn.

The year began with the threat of another global conflict that can undo the world in a way not seen since the Great War almost a century ago, and it is now more important than ever for the Muslim community to come together in support of those who are suffering.

As we all fast and practice restraint during the month of Ramadan, let us also embark on a journey to appreciate the ones who are close to us and show us the kind of compassion that we should be showing to others, while also working towards improving ourselves as individuals and the lives of those who surround us.

With the shadow of the past two years of the pandemic behind us, let us all pray together and reach the kind of peace that our religion teaches.

We wish Ramadan Mubarak to all our readers.
