Sold down the river

The recent incident of as many as 10 buildings collapsing on the banks of Kumar River in Faridpur’s Nagarkanda upazila is, unfortunately, nothing new as locals have alleged that an unplanned river dredging is what led to the event

Update : 20 Jan 2022, 05:12 PM

The issue in question is threatening to be even more serious, as at least 100 more establishments, including homes, are at risk of collapsing due to the callous actions of a few.

The cracks on the river bank are currently around six feet deep and the Nagarkanda Government MN Academy building, police station, the central Kaali Temple as well as a part of the municipality market area are at risk of collapsing.

This is a grave incident threatening to happen, and the ones responsible for it need to be brought to book soon regardless of where their patronage lies.

This is a serious event and one that warrants equally serious investigation to root out to ones responsible and have them be made examples of.

As Bangladesh strides toward more development, big intrusive projects, while necessary, can become a threat to the environment and the livelihoods of many. The authorities should ensure compliance with conservation laws through enforcement as well as introducing more appropriate legislation when necessary.

For the Faridpur incident, other than initiating an investigation, the authorities should also take quick action to help the victims whose houses were damaged or destroyed, without them having to go through lengthy legal processes.
