Tigers ace the Kiwi Test

Hoping that this is just the start of a fantastic year for Bangladesh

Update : 07 Jan 2022, 08:35 AM

Congratulations to the Bangladesh Cricket Team for their historic win against New Zealand earlier this week.

There are many factors that contribute to this victory being a seminal moment in sports for us: The fact that it happened in the Test format, the fact that Bangladesh were missing its greatest cricketer ever in Shakib Al Hasan and arguably its greatest batsman ever in Tamim Iqbal, and that it happened in away conditions on New Zealand soil, where Bangladesh also successfully took all 20 New Zealand wickets. Make no mistake about it, this was one of the most significant victories in Bangladesh’s history as a cricket-playing nation.

Indeed, it is the contribution by the younger generation in the victory, led by relative newcomer and Man-of-the-Match Ebadot Hossain’s incredible bowling in the second innings, to go with the top order batting of Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy, that is most encouraging. For too long, there has been chatter about Bangladesh not cultivating the next generation of cricketing talent to take the country forward. Hopefully this match is the first step towards rectifying that situation.

On the topic of chatter, too many of our fans have been guilty of being what can only be termed as fair-weather fans, frantically cheering the team when on a high, yet mercilessly berating them when the chips are down, which is a shame because it is precisely then when our cricketers require the most support.

Congratulations once again to the Tigers for their remarkable victory. The entire nation is proud of their achievement, and hoping that this is just the start of a fantastic year for Bangladesh.
