Among the major ramifications of climate change are the millions who are displaced and forced to become migrants, with the number only increasing year on year. What has been particularly distressing is that most climate migrants hail from countries that have little to do with the climate crisis the world finds itself in today.
To that end, we commend Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen for calling upon major carbon emitting countries to rehabilitate these climate migrants displaced from their homes, where he rightfully stated that this responsibility falls upon those in the international community that are responsible for exacerbating the effects of climate change.
It is extremely disappointing that, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that now spans multiple decades, there are still those who refuse to seriously consider the effects of climate change, and it is even more frustrating that oftentimes, these deniers are in affluent economies, thereby only worsening an already dire predicament.
Make no mistake about it, climate change is and will continue to be the biggest threat to humanity in the 21st century and it is about time richer economies -- and it must be reiterated that they continue to be the major culprits in terms of carbon emissions and causing climate change -- hold up their end of the bargain.
This includes actually meeting the $100 billion in climate financing that was agreed upon previously, and doing their part in helping poorer nations that are suffering from the effects of climate change through little fault of their own. It is only through a concerted effort, where every stakeholder upholds their end of the bargain, will we ever be able to navigate the climate crisis with any success.
