Rape is a most unforgiveable crime, and should never go unpunished.
But the conviction rate for rape cases in Bangladesh stands at less than 1% -- and this is a statistic that should disturb us deeply, and serve as a wake-up all.
We have a long fight ahead of us to get justice for the brave women who come forward and report rape.
Not only do we need to address the obvious issues -- flawed investigations and failure to follow due process -- it is imperative that we address the deep sickness that exists within society which causes us to ignore the rights of women so often.
The system must change. If we are to call ourselves civilised, we have to start putting rapists behind bars, and protecting our women.
