ED: A tough decision for unprecedented times

It is important to ensure, moving forward, that the 2020 batch does not face any discrimination or undue hardship in the university entrance scenario or the job market

Update : 11 Oct 2020, 01:22 AM

Unsurprisingly, not everyone is happy with the decision to cancel the HSC examinations for this year. It is far from a perfect solution to the current pandemic, and yet, the government is truly between a rock and a hard place in this regard. The exams can be postponed no further, and there seems to be no better realistic, workable option.

HSC candidates for this year will be awarded their results based on performances in two previous public examinations -- the Junior School Certificate (JSC), and the Secondary School Certificate (SSC). This is, it goes without saying, not entirely fair. Many candidates with good JSC or SSC results will be gaining an unfair advantage, but others who have drastically improved in the meantime will not get a chance to prove themselves. It must be fully acknowledged, then, that the 2020 HSC examination results come with a footnote due to unprecedented circumstances.

Safety and human life should always come first. There are 1.36 million candidates in Bangladesh, making it statistically highly likely for there to be a spread of infection. Covid-19 has taken a tragic and devastating toll across the country, and the risk of going forward with the exams as usual would simply not have been worth it. Needless to say, Bangladesh is a long way away from being able to carry this out in a safe and socially distanced manner, due to our population density and infrastructure.

It is important to ensure, moving forward, that the 2020 batch does not face any discrimination or undue hardship in the university entrance scenario or the job market. The pandemic is a crisis that hit us without warning, and certainly, students should not be punished for its ramifications.
