ED: Law enforcement should go properly digital

A more up-to-date police force is, then, good news for all of us

Update : 24 Jun 2020, 11:38 PM

During a time of pandemic, all operations need to modernize and move towards a digital way of doing things. After all, this direction perfectly aligns with a vision of a Digital Bangladesh, and now is a more necessary time than ever before to take this vision seriously.

There is no reason for the police to be left behind in that regard, and so it is good to see the Inspector General of Police Benazir Ahmed give out instructions on making the application process online to bring the recruitment system of police constables up to date.

Recruitment, however, is just one aspect of a much larger picture. Now, more than ever before, it is important for people to be able to access police services online. In the recent past, we have seen good progress being made in this direction, for example, for quite some time people have been able to apply for and obtain police clearance certificates online, thereby eliminating much of the hassle of having to commute to a police station, which seems particularly difficult if not impossible during a time of lockdown.

However, it is of utmost importance that we are not half-hearted in these measures. Often a particular technology is introduced to update the system, but there is a lack of personnel trained in these new digital systems, and so many officials prefer to fall back on the old ways, resisting change.

But the world has changed, whether we like it or not, and this means embracing technology fully to cope with our new reality. A more up-to-date police force is, then, good news for all of us.
