Lighting up every home

If we wish to move towards a technology-based society, access to power will be essential

Update : 13 Feb 2020, 11:52 PM

When it comes to electricity, the government has done a tremendous job of ensuring that as many people have access to it as possible, no matter where they are located.

This has come about as a result of a focus on power generation, with our current capacity being 22,787MW, which is taking power to 96% of the population, according to the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources.

However, what is more encouraging is the government’s plan to ensure that every single person in Bangladesh has access to uninterrupted power, with the prime minister promising 100% electricity coverage by the end of Mujib Borsho.

This is more than just a necessary step in Bangladesh’s development trajectory.

After all, power is more than merely access to electricity which lights up our homes. It represents the opportunity that millions of people will now have, and is an avenue towards a stronger and more sustainable economy.

It will also remain a key component for digitization, as our country moves faster and faster towards the reality of a truly Digital Bangladesh.

Such a step boasts of the long-term plans currently in place for Bangladesh’s progress in the future and if, as the PM has said, we wish to move towards a technology-based society, access to power will be essential.

As we move closer to a middle-income Bangladesh, we must, of course, celebrate our capacity to generate power, but also diversify how we generate it, as the world moves towards cleaner sources of energy.

There is no reason we should not be able to provide better services to our people while simultaneously ensuring that we do our bit to take care of the environment.
