A high-speed railway connecting a nation’s cities is an important factor in its overall development

Update : 21 Jul 2018, 06:34 PM

Some of the biggest cities in the more developed parts of the world rely on high-speed trains for a reason: They are cheap, they are efficient, and they are consistent.

Take, for example the European Union, where economic growth and a high quality of life have been achieved largely through affordable, safe, and efficient rail travel. Therefore, we can safely conclude that a high-speed railway connecting a nation’s cities is an important factor in its overall development.

To that end, it is good to know that the government has recently given the green light to a high-speed railway project that would connect two of the biggest and busiest cities in the nation: Dhaka and Chittagong.

The project aims to shave off more than five hours from the seven to 10 hours it currently takes to get from one city to another using the existing railway infrastructure.

If implemented properly, the possibilities would be endless.

Dhaka and Chittagong are the two main hubs of trade and business in the entire country, so it is natural to expect faster physical connectivity between the two cities to have a positive impact these two factors.

We hope this project would encourage the administration to start giving our railway infrastructure the attention it deserves. One of the biggest impediments to Bangladesh’s development is the untenable traffic which plagues our busy metropolises.

By propping up and modernizing our rail-lines, and introducing the metro in our busier cities, not only can we see our traffic situation improve, we would also potentially improve our overall productivity by a great degree.
