Germany assists Bangladesh in adopting a national employment injury insurance system

Update : 11 Oct 2015, 02:07 PM

A tripartite Letter of Intent (LoI) has recently been signed between the Federal Republic of Germany, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the International Labor Organization (ILO) yesterday to support the establishment of a national employment injury insurance system in Bangladesh. Dr Gerd Müller, federal minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Mikail Shipar, secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Srinivas B Reddy, country director of the ILO signed the LoI at a ceremony held at the Westin Hotel in Dhaka on October 6.

With this ambitious new initiative Germany, Bangladesh and the ILO will further strengthen the garment sector in this country and contribute to an improvement of the safety conditions in the industry. Germany has extensive experiences with employment injury insurances and the establishment of such insurances does not only lead to safer working conditions but also guarantees the livelihood of individual workers and their family after tragic industrial accidents. This ambitious initiative to adopt the system for the RMG sector in Bangladesh will have a lasting positive impact on the garments industry.
