Chills and thrills

Update : 06 Nov 2016, 04:57 PM
collagemenz  You’re probably still dealing with the cold or flu you managed to unsuccessfully avoid in the transition period between two seasons. The days are shorter and so time seems to fly by in a flash. But here are a few ways to keep warm during the colder months with your stylish wardrobe.

Suit up upgrade

With the changing of seasons, you’re also expected to wear winter friendly fabrics. Whether you’re a regular suit-wearing kind of guy or only for special events, you’re going to need to know what your winter suit is made of. The truth is, and always has been, you don’t need to break bank to wear a good looking, tailored-made suit. And that suit you’ve always relied on throughout the year isn’t going to help you much during the colder days. You’ll need to invest more in wool and flannel with the fabric weight around 16oz. To take things further, there’s always tweed, cashmere, corduroy and herringbone. Are they cheap? Of course not. But paying a little extra is only going to help you rather than hurt you. Also, this is definitely the time to sport a three-piece suit. The waistcoat (vest) not only add an extra warm layer on your body, it classes up the joint, making things look elegant and effortless.

Layer it on

As mentioned, layering is a very important factor to your entire look when the temperature drops. It’s more about function than style, but why not do it in the coolest way possible, right? With the trendier stores nowadays, like Urban Truth or Noir, there are plenty of youthful and edgy numbers like shell jackets and vests stuffed with insulating fills that become a huge advantage during this time. Keep in mind, the collarless style of jackets and vests are the way to go, but it still remains as extra layer. Once you walk indoors, it’ll be easy to slide in and out of the most outer layer of your outfit.

Heavy-duty from head to toe

The same rules apply for your feet. What most people don’t realise is that the cold hits harder from the feet. Unless the floors at home are covered in carpet or rugs, you’ll have to cover your feet to avoid the ice-cold tiles or faux wooden floors. Merino-wool, calf-high socks are the most ideal options for your feet before you head out with your equally heavy-duty shoes. The more skin is exposed to the cold, as you would with ankle-high or slip-on socks, the more uncomfortable you’ll feel for the rest of the day. You should also remember to wear socks and shoes that do well with the wet and cold, specifically the sweat you’ll have to deal with when wearing warmer socks.

Turtle over crew

For the relaxed look, crewneck knitwear is an easy go-to. However, when the cold becomes a bit too much for your threshold, a quality knitted turtleneck sweater is your best bet. Some turtlenecks are rolled out, while others aren’t. No matter the style, they’ll come in slim-fits and chunkier versions, depending on how warm you want to stay. Again, a fabric like cashmere beats the rest because it’s more insulating and breathable than that of the merino wool quality. The idea of a turtleneck might be a bit suffocating for some, mentally. If that is a bit too much, there are always scarves that will take care of protecting your neck.

Cosy and comfy

With all the style tips and trends, the most important thing about winter is layering smart. You never have to go overboard by wearing chunky sweaters, beanie and gloves. Even though having gloves is a plus, all that extra weight you can do without. At most, you should have three layers on you whenever you head out. The layers should obviously be warm enough, but light enough for you to breathe and easily take off.
