Better safe than sorry

Update : 30 Apr 2017, 07:01 PM
When you know how injuries occur in the workplace, you can take measures to avoid them. Read on to find out five common causes of workplace injuries.

Falls, slips and trips

Office kitchens and lounges are common places for slips to happen. Hardwood and tile flooring surfaces are especially dangerous after they have been wiped. Electrical cords that are not taped down and carpeting that has come off can also be the causes of employees tripping, and sometimes bringing on something much more serious. Poorly lit hallways and stairs are danger spots as well, since they obscure the ability to see what is underneath.

Toppling objects

If tall pieces of furniture such as bookshelves and filing cabinets are not safely secured, an earthquake could make them pitch forward and dislodge their contents, putting the workers in danger. Workplace injuries can also be caused by heavy objects, such as supplies and document boxes that are stacked on high shelves, and are moved to the edge each time they are put back.

Fire in the hold

Fire poses a significant risk in the workplace. Knowing where your fire extinguishers are, holding fire drills and informing employees of your emergency escape routes can ensure safety. Fire extinguishers should be maintained at regular intervals (at least once a year), or when specifically indicated by an inspection. It includes a thorough examination and any necessary repair, recharging or replacement.

Toxic touch

Protective clothing, eye wear and gloves are compulsory for employees whose occupations require them to be around dangerous materials, chemicals and toxic waste. Slip-ups in these rules can bring about explosions, burns, respiratory illnesses, visual impairment and skin diseases.

And we all fall down

Opening a door too quickly or turning a corner too fast may lead to unintended collisions with co-workers. While it may not be with enough force to knock one or the other unconscious, the chances of injury increase if there are hot liquids and sharp or heavy objects involved.   While workplace accidents are common, many are completely preventable. Follow these practices to prevent accidents at your workplace.Know the hazardsIdentify any potential risks at your workplace. It is important to assess every conceivable situation for injury, and to make a list of these potential risks.Conduct emergency drillsEmergency drills ensure that if an emergency occurs, employees know what to do and can follow the emergency plan without any confusion. For instance, if there’s a fire, everyone should file out in an orderly manner, and know where the nearest exits are. Make this training available to all the employees so as to keep away from any workplace injury.Provide protection equipmentEarplugs, earmuffs, hard hats, safety goggles, gloves or face masks can dramatically reduce risk of injury. Take time to teach employees how to use their safety gears properly.Regular maintenanceIt is important to make sure that building maintenance for torn carpets, faulty wiring, fire exits, loose railings or decrepit steps are tended to immediately. Also, any fire extinguishers or smoke detectors at your workplace should be maintained regularly.Display safety information clearlyClearly mark all potentially dangerous areas with signs. Make sure the safety guidelines are visible and easy to read. Employers should post signs reminding employees of proper safety procedures and places where those particular procedures should be practiced.
