People should watch this movie because it shows a bleak world where everything one works for can get destroyed just like in real life which is often not depicted in films. However, the film also shows how Tonya rises above her tragedy and makes the best of her life, something we often fail to do in reality.Ride Like a Girl (2018) is based on Michelle Payne who was told all her life that she was not man enough to becomes a world class jockey but she went ahead to prove everyone wrong when she became the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup.It is not every day that we get to see a female jockey and that too one who has won the coveted Melbourne Cup.
All these films show women at the peak of their respective careers. These are careers which involve physical strength, skills and perseverance. It includes enduring pain, recovering from major injuries and constant training.
Grameenphone’s TVC on ShewliShathi deserves a special mention because it shows a Bangladeshi autistic woman with physical and mental disabilities become Special Olympics champion. Kudos to her for proving no goal is impossible if one is determined to succeed.
Bollywood is coming up with such biopics even more now. 2018 is already set for biopics on SainaNehwal and P. V. Sindhu. Both these ladies are world class badminton players with names engraved in Olympics.
People’s eschewed perception of gender roles remains because it is not only men who undermine women but more often than not, women do too. Women run or throw like women not because they are physically weak but because they have been made to believe since early childhood through socialization that girls areweak. The weakness lies in our beliefs and not in reality.
These biopics allow us a closer peek at the lives of these iconic women who prove to the world that they are no less than any man. If anything they are stronger because they had to fight harder to achieve their dreams than any man ever had to.
