Huawei Mate 10 Pro - Intelligence is the new smart in a phone

Update : 29 Jan 2018, 08:01 PM
Chinese powerhouse Huawei makes smartphones, smartwatches and the hardware that powers mobile phone networks around the world. Recently, the company revealed its latest high-end mobile, the Mate 10 Pro. Not only is the Huawei Mate 10 Pro the most impressive device we have seen from Huawei to date, it’s also one of the most impressive flagships currently on the market, undercutting the competition while offering more in some key areas. For starters, it’s got the new near-bezel-less front and 18:9 display. There’s no notch cutting into the screen like the Apple iPhone X either – just a thin strip above it holding the front camera, flash and top speaker, and an equally miniscule one at the bottom with the Huawei logo on it. It really does look suitably futuristic from the front. Overall it’s a great screen. The extra space you get with the 18:9 ratio makes web browsing and game-playing a delight. The dual cameras are themselves set on a stylish strip of a slightly different colour to the rest of the phone. They protrude slightly from the body, but that just means you won’t end up pressing one when you’re feeling around for the fingerprint sensor. Huawei’s stuck with the two-camera set-up it introduced back on 2016’s P9. Both cameras have Leica-made lenses with a large, light-gathering f/1.6 aperture. The colour sensor has optical image stabilisation and there’s also laser auto focus and phase detection on board. Like Google, which recently announced its Pixel 2 handset, Huawei is betting the farm on artificial intelligence (AI) with a powerful processor, called the Kirin 970. It boasts eight cores and a neural processing unit (NPU). The Huawei Mate 10 Pro isn’t the first phone packed with seriously clever AI tech inside it, but it may be the smartest yet – a mobile that’s capable of recognising what you’re pointing your camera at and predicting which app you’re about to open. In addition, it also has a classy glass design, eye-caressing 18:9 screen and mighty battery and you have a smartphone fit to stand with any released this year. The camera app is where you’ll first meet Huawei’s dedicated neural-network processing unit (NPU) - the AI brain sitting inside it is ready to take over the world. The camera understands whether you are photographing a pet, a person, plants or food and applies filters that are commonly used for photography of such objects. For fast-moving objects, it is helpful that the focus of that movement follows consistently until you trigger. Regarding performance, The Mate 10 Pro is a beast of a phone, running on one of the fastest processors in the world, Huawei’s own Kirin 970, paired with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. Nothing seems to trouble it, and it’s blindingly fast whatever you’re doing. Use the fingerprint sensor, for instance, and it’ll spring into action instantly. Fire up the camera app and there’s not a hint of delay.  It charges quickly when jacked up to a Huawei supercharger, too, giving you around 60% after a mere 30-minute boost. Huawei wants to be first in the race for the best smartphone and the pro version of the Mate series is its strongest effort yet. There's hardly any other phone with which we can get such a good result so quickly. Here, Huawei can stand up to the consistently more expensive competition. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is an easy phone to love for many, many reasons. If you want a big, powerful Android phone with a lovely camera and superb battery life – which most people do – then the Mate 10 Pro should be near the top of your list. The enigmatic phone costs Tk83,900 with an optional EMI facility of 6 months.
