Block prints and bright, sunshine colours by Mree are sure to add a spirit of cheer to your day

Update : 02 May 2019, 12:57 PM

Mree – the brainchild of three childhood friends who shared an interest in designing clothes – brings you comfortable, casual clothing for everyday wear. What started out as a hobby for them soon evolved into a fast-growing business. Despite having other commitments in their personal lives, the young women have been successful at upholding the quality of their brand, designing minimalistic pieces that make a statement.

The team, comprising of Ishrat Jahan, Sarah Ahmed, and Doito Bonotulshi, find time in their busy lives to meet up and plan their unique collections. They started off as a Facebook page in 2016, designing clothes using printed fabrics that are available in the market. Soon afterwards, they decided to customize the prints, and stumbled upon block printing. Their existing collections include custom-made block prints, which has become a staple for the brand. Starting from kurtis to sarees, they have pieces that can serve a variety of people. Each of the designs is a collaboration between the three.

Sarah, a graduate of IBA, who is currently in the last semester of her MBA from the same institute, is usually the one who comes up with the initial idea for the designs. All three of them, then, collaborate to finalize the designs. Ishrat and Doito are also artistically inclined; the former having a background in art and design, and a degree in Economics and Anthropology from BRAC University, who is currently working as a research assistant at the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, while the latter holds an architecture degree from BRAC University and is working at an architecture firm at present.

The Mree team members have their hands full, what with their respective careers and further studies, and their future plans may lead them to different parts of the world. Because of this, the long-term plans for Mree may be put on hold, but they certainly have big things in store for their beloved business.

Another standout for Mree is how the owners, themselves, model their clothes. It started off as a cost-effective method, but soon became a signature style. Because they do it themselves, the photos bring life to the clothes, and have a more natural, personal feel to them. “It’s easier to translate your vision yourself,” says Ishrat. The friends-cum-partners make time to meet up in order to plan things for Mree, and this gives them the opportunity to also spend time with each other, for which they’re grateful. Mree has given them the chance to not only strengthen their bonds with each other, but also pursue the passion they have for design.

Mree celebrated its third birthday last month, and this month, they introduced their Baishakh collection. For this collection, they kept the traditional red and white colour theme, while also including blue and pink for a unique touch. They also customize clothes according to clients’ preferences, which enables each design to be exclusive.
