Festive season is here and it’s time for days out with friends, family gatherings and indulging in scrumptious delicacies. Skincare regimes aren’t to be ignored duing of the holidays though, rather they become more important since holiday season can lead to breakouts and dullness - a total skincare nightmare - if we aren’t careful.
Here are the four commandments of skincare - with a holiday twist - to make holiday skincare a piece of cake.
Cleanse your troubles away
No matter how tempting it is to go to bed with your makeup on after a long day of partying, don’t do it. Oil-based removers can help wipe makeup away in seconds, and a soothing foam cleanser can do wonders to keep your skin looking radiant throughout holiday season. Use a mild cleanser first thing in the morning and again at night to remove all traces of toxins and pollutants.
Scrub, scrub, scrub!
The key to the perfect holiday glow lies in proper exfoliation. To get a fresh-faced, glowy look you should exfoliate once leading up to festivities to slough away dry patches and dead skin, and once after all the partying comes to an end to prevent your skin from getting clogged up. The ideal time for this is between cleansing and moisturizing, which brings us to the next point.
Nourish and moisturize
There’s no such thing as being too kind to your skin and no better time for it than holiday season. Festivities can often leave your skin looking - and feeling - dry. For an instant dose of hydration, moisturize immediately after cleansing.
Holiday season may require going the extra mile, so consider adding a hydrating mask to your regime. Use the good ol’ cold spoon trick and a dollop of eye cream to tackle puffiness and make the skin under your eyes look bright and fresh!
Stay sun safe
If you're going to be out all day, you'll need to equip yourself accordingly. Consider using foundational makeup with broad spectrum SPF 30 and above or a tinted sunscreen to even out skin tone so it can dual as protection and base. Remember to have sunscreen on no matter what, rain or shine and reapply every three hours.
Now that we’ve covered the dos, here are some skincare no-nos to avoid this festive season.
Focusing only on facial skin
When it comes to skincare, our field of vision often becomes too narrow and we overlook areas such as our arms and necks. The next time you’re heading out, remember to lather up on moisturizer and sunscreen on these spots too - not just your face.
It’s too hot!
It can be hard to resist the urge to take a relaxing hot shower after a long day out, but did you know that hot water strips your skin of natural oils, stealing away its moisture? Opt for a lukewarm or cold shower instead and your skin will thank you.
Tools of the trade
Dirt and old makeup residue can do some serious damage to your skin, so this festive season make sure you clean your trusty brush set - especially your foundation brush - before glamming up.
Too much product
This applies as much to makeup as it does to skincare products. At the end of the day, wanting to look your best shouldn’t drive you crazy. Pare down your skincare regime to only the essentials lest you get overwhelmed.
Happy holidays!
