Jol Bindu exhibits the natural beauty of Bangladesh

A water colour painting exhibition “Jol Bindu” by artist Md Shahanoor Mamun is on at the Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) till September 6.

The theme of the exhibition is based on the seasons of Bangladesh. This is Shahanoor’s debut exhibition, through which, he shares his uptake on his travelling experiences to scenic places such as Brahmaputra River, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Old Dhaka, St Martin, Chera-dip, Bandarbans and Mymensing. He has done a wonderful job in rending the transparent natural beauty through expert use of watercolour. The way he views and understands a place and its essence can be clearly seen in his artworks and the beauty of the country in various seasons is locked with skilled strokes on canvas.

In an interview with Dhaka Tribune, the artist talks about his paintings: “The varying seasons of Bangladesh have so many wonderful colours, that it is a blessing for an artist to render it on canvas in a creative and innovative way. Summer time gives us vibrant colours to work with, whereas winter has more sophisticated muted shades. The diversity of landscapes in hill tracks and low lands offers an amazing range of picturesque scenery.”

Another dimension that the artist captured is the traditions of the old town and its lifestyles and the dazzling and vibrant rickshaw paintings that are a unique aspect of the alleys of the area.

Along with the paintings, the artist also installed sculptures as an experimental work at the exhibition. The exhibition “Jol Bindu” is about conversation with nature which will be heard by others through the language of watercolor artworks.

Besides capturing the beauty of the wonderful sites, the artist also painted the affection between a mother and child and the special dimension of the singular relationship.

About the painting, Shahanoor states: “This painting is close to my heart as it is derived from my childhood memory and portrays the warmth and bond I shared with my mother.”

About using water colour as a medium, the artist shares: “It is my favorite medium, water and colour are too different subjects, when it emerges together, it forms a colour of different seasons.”

Mamun participated in over twenty six group exhibitions, he also attended numerous workshops. The artist obtained his BFA from the department of ceramic sculpture from faculty of fine Art, University of Dhaka.

Eminent Artist Mustafa Monowar graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Md Robiul Islam, assistant professor, Department of Ceramic, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka and renowned art critic Mainuddin Khaled was present as special guests in the inaugural ceremony.
