‘Kanjus’ goes to Monaco Theatre Festival

Update : 18 Aug 2013, 04:43 PM

Loko Natyadal will perform 619 th and 620 th show of their famous production “Kanjus” at the prestigious Monaco Theatre Festival (Mondial du Theatre), which will be held from August 19 to August 20.

The theatre troupe will stage two shows on August 27 and August 28 at the theatre Des Varieties in Monaco. A 13 member team will set off for Monaco on August 20. On the other hand, the head of the troupe, Liaquat Ali Lucky will attend the 31th congress of the International Armature Theatre Association and take lead of the Asia region.

The play “Kanjus” is an adaptation of “The Miser,” by the famous French playwright Moliere.

Popular theatre personality and veteran actor Tarik Anam Khan has adapted the play that has been directed by Liaquat Ali Lucky, the troupe president and the director general of BSA.

The adapted play “Kanjus” has an impressive history of being staged more than 600 times by the troupe.

As a preparation for the Monaco festival, the troupe staged its 617th show of the play on Saturday at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Most of the set design, costumes, backdrop music and light have been changed for the festival. Even, the time duration of the play is cut off into a 60 minute production to meet the time requirements of the Monaco fiesta. “Kanjus” has managed to keep the originality of the story and its incorporation of hypocrisy, arrogance, greed, social pretensions, biasness and discrimination in the comedy was flawless and entertaining.

The charechter of “Kanjus” is of a “Dhakaiyya” (a resident of Old Dhaka) central character, a rich and hilarious old man named Haider Ali whose local Dhakaiya language punches into the play. Through Haider Ali’s story, “Kanjus” attacks the selfish and opportunistic tendencies of the privileged class.
