Update : 01 Jul 2013, 06:11 AM

For the first time, eminent artist Biren Shome has brought out a solo exhibition of his print works. The exhibition at the Kibria Printmaking Studio of Dhaka Art Centre, which has been organised as a part of a series of exhibitions of individual artists, has begun on June 28.

An influential artist in the Bangladeshi art scene, Shome has proven his command of many different media in the past. His newest works, he says, aim to display his dexterity in one specific medium.

The exhibition will continue till July 24 and is open for all every day from 3pm to 8pm.

The prints are made through etching, collagraph and relief print making processes. Most of the relief print works are black and white.

Etching print works are created with sepia as their base color. Reddish, bluish and greenish colours are used a well. Collagraph print works are mostly yellow and sepia.

Biren Shome has experimented with many things in the current exhibition, making it a rather unique collection of small sized works. The seasoned artist has used various technical methods developed over a period of approximately five decades.

The assorted display not only showcases Biren’s pursuit of his passion for man and nature but also documents his emotional development over the period. Biren’s desire for a harmonious world and its coexistence with all of flora and fauna goes beyond the simple desire for an egalitarian society.

Through this process of artistic endeavours, he connects himself with the eleventh century poet Kalidas. It is as if the flowers, animals, birds and faces in his prints are a manifestation of the same eternal order or truth.

Biren Shome's solo is the third in a series of exhibitions at Kibria Printmaking Studio. The previous two exhibitions showcased works by eminent artists Wakilur Rahman and AH Dhali.

Shome was born in 1948 in Jamalpur. He completed his BFA from the College of Arts and Crafts (presently Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) in 1969. His work has been shown at exhibitions in India, Germany, England, Hong Kong, Brazil and other countries.

He has received many awards and accolades including Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Award, Atish Dipankar Gold Medal, Palok Shishu Sahitya Sangshad Award, Chandrabati Gold Medal, Poet Abu Zafar Obaidullah Award and Begum Faizunessa Gold Medal.
