In this interview with Dhaka Tribune’s Tanvir Hasan, Munna discusses the organization’s challenges, strategies and youth engagement

What strategies is the Jubo Dal adopting to enhance its organizational activities?

The Jubo Dal, as a significant organization under the BNP, has been actively working across Bangladesh for many years. We are focusing on establishing a proactive and efficient Jubo Dal by conducting district-wide visits. BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has emphasized spreading his message of fostering kindness and winning hearts through compassion rather than fear.

He has also instructed us to align our work with the evolving dynamics of politics and engage youth in collaborative efforts with the general public. Moreover, he has given strict directives to avoid any form of wrongdoing. We are ensuring his message reaches the grassroots level. Our members are instructed to refrain from actions that might create public resentment toward the Jubo Dal or BNP.

What is the Jubo Dal doing to increase the BNP’s popularity?

Unlike the Awami League, which misruled the country for 15 years, the BNP is not disconnected from the masses. If anyone within our ranks indulges in wrongdoing, we take prompt action. The BNP does not ignore the misdeeds of its members. On the other hand, the Awami League seldom acknowledges or addresses the wrongdoings of its members.

Tarique Rahman has outlined a vision for building the Bangladesh of the future in his 31-point agenda. The BNP has been led by iconic figures like the late president Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia. Currently, Tarique Rahman leads it with the same dedication. The BNP does not shield wrongdoers and is working beyond conventional political norms, taking action against offenders within all affiliated organizations.

How is the Jubo Dal addressing issues related to extortion and other crimes involving some of its members?

The Jubo Dal is a vast organization comprising hundreds of thousands of members. They endured 17 years of oppression and fought against fascism. Many even sacrificed their lives in the movement to end Sheikh Hasina’s regime. Although isolated incidents involving certain members have come to light, we have acted swiftly to address them. We do not deny them; disciplinary actions have been taken against those found guilty. However, there are instances where some individuals exploit the Jubo Dal’s name for personal gains. We urge the public to remain vigilant against such elements.

What are the Jubo Dal’s plans regarding elections?

If free and fair elections are held, the BNP will undoubtedly return to power. The BNP’s widespread popularity is evident, as the people continue to support our uncompromising leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, who has always stood against injustice. Our acting chairman Tarique Rahman leads with the same integrity. The Jubo Dal, as a BNP affiliate, will play a vital role in the upcoming election. Our members will support BNP candidates and work democratically to ensure a successful election outcome.

What are the Jubo Dal’s views and initiatives regarding the youth?

Late president Ziaur Rahman founded the Jubo Dal as the first affiliate of the BNP, aiming to empower the youth. He initiated various programs to make them self-reliant. In line with his legacy, Tarique Rahman has provided us with specific guidelines to work for youth development. We will soon present these plans to the nation.

What message do you have for Jubo Dal members?

As a large organization, Jubo Dal members must prioritize standing beside the people. Our politics must evolve in line with qualitative changes in society, and members must strive to understand public sentiment.

During our visits to the districts, we have emphasized the importance of staying close to the people, upholding Bangladeshi nationalism and countering all anti-national conspiracies with unwavering dedication.

What is your perspective on Bangladesh-India relations?

As a neighbouring country, India must maintain amicable relations with Bangladesh. Being a larger country, their responsibilities are more significant. However, our sovereignty is paramount. We Bangladeshis deeply love our country and are committed to protecting its dignity and independence. We advocate a neighbourly relationship rooted in mutual respect and the spirit of nationalism.
