At least 13 people were killed in separate road accidents that took place in Chittagong, Thakurgaon, Brahmanbaria and Bogra yesterday, our district correspondents report.
In Chittagong, three people were killed in Mirsari and Rangunia upazilas.
Police said Md Farhad, 42, and Md Mohibullah, 11, were killed on the spot as a pick-up van carrying them plunged into a roadside ditch after its driver lost his control over the steering in Hinguli Bazar area.
In another accident, Rashedul, Rashedul Haque, 18, an auto-mobile mechanic, was critically injured as a truck hit him around 12:00pm when he was repairing a vehicle on the side of the road in Isapur area of Rangunia upazila.
Locals rushed him to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
In Thakurgaon, three people were killed and four sustained injuries when a bus collided with a local vehicle in Thakurgaon’s Bhulli area.
The deceased were identified as Juran Ali, 25, Montu 35, and Habib 32. They all hailed from Laithuti village of Sadao upazila. Juran and Montu died on the spot while Habib succumbed to his injuries at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital. The injured persons were also in critical condition.
Sub-inspector of Thakurgaon sadar police station Babul Hossain said a coach of Thakurgaon bound Bablu Enterprise had collided head on with Nasimon at around 7am. Those killed and injured were all passengers of Nasimon.
Officer in-charge AKM Mehedi Hasan said police rushed to the spot upon hearing the news and took the injured persons to hospital with the help of fire service department.
Brahmanbaria correspondent said at least four people were killed and 3 others injured in a head –on-collision between a truck and a private car at Shohagpur area on Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Nur Haider, in-charge of highway police, said the accident took place when the sand-laden truck collided with the car coming from the opposite direction in front of Firoj Miah Vocational College in the afternoon, leaving seven people critically injured.
The injured were rushed to Brahmanbaria sadar hospital where doctors declared four dead.
In Bogra, two people were killed and two others injured when a truck rammed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Sujabad Dahpara in Shajahanpur upazila.
The deceased were identified as the auto-rickshaw driver Ziaur Rahman, 32, and its passenger Jagadish Kumar Kundu.
Witnesses said, the accident took place in the area around 7:30 am when the truck rammed into an auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite side, leaving one dead on the spot and three others injured.
The injured were rushed to Bogra Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where another one died.
Agitated locals set fire on truck but its driver and helper managed to flee.
Alamgir Hossain, sub-inspector of Shajahanpur police station, confirmed the incident.
