In praise of successful bone marrow transplantation (BMT) operations in the country, Health Minister Md Nasim yesterday said the success had created a history in the health sector.
Addressing a press briefing at Dhaka Medical College Hospital 2 (DMCH 2), the minister thanked and expressed gratitude to the local and international BMT experts, including doctors, nurses and others, especially Dr Bimolanshu Dey and his team members of Massachusetts General Hospital in the US, for their service.
The BMT unit of DMCH has successfully done the transplantation operation on Omar Ali on March 10 and Md Alamgir on 26 April. They were the first two BMT patients in Bangladesh who underwent the operation.
“No one except we and our family members know how we passed those horrible days. We have got a new life,” Omar and Alamgir said.
Professor MA Khan, head of haematology department and programme director of the BMT unit at DMCH, said they had successfully performed BMT operation on three patients.
“The third operation was done on Asgar Ali of Thakurgaon on June 8. He is recovering very fast,” he added.
