DMP takes security measures for Eid, Puja

Update : 03 Oct 2013, 03:59 AM

Continuing tradition, the authority of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken special security measures for the city dwellers on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha and upcoming Durga Puja in the capital and its surrounds.

On the occasion of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of Hindus, and Eid-ul-Azha, the second-largest festival of Muslims, uniformed and plainclothes law enforcers will be deployed at all the puja mandaps and cattle markets in the capital to maintain law and order, DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed said yesterday.

About the deterioration of law and order situation, he said some mysterious incidents had happened, but the members of law enforcing agencies were investigating the matters and criminals would be “brought to book.”

“The special security measures will come into effect from October 4 to the end of Eid holidays,” he said at yesterday’s press briefing at the media and community centre of DMP, adding that police in plain clothes will also keep a strong vigilance on different cattle markets to check for extortion.

“Fake note detectors will also be installed to identify counterfeit banknotes in the cattle markets,” he added.

This year, puja will be celebrated at 206 mandaps in the capital where additional law enforcers will be deployed and close circuit cameras will also be set up to avoid any untoward incident.

Additional Commissioners of DMP – Abdul Jalil Mandal, Abdul Jalil, Mili Bishwash and Sheikh Maruf Hossain - were also present at the briefing.

The Durga Puja will be celebrated between October 10 and October 14 and the Eid-ul-Azha may be celebrated on October 16.
