British experts are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh this weekend to help improve safety and building standards in the country’s garment sector, UK Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening announced on Saturday.
The team of three UK experts would be coming to the country at the request of the Bangladeshi building regulations agency to help tackle weaknesses in the industrial building inspection regime, said a British High Commission media release.
The experts will examine the building standards legislation, strengthening it to prevent people from dying in accidents; scrutinise the current inspection regimes for existing and new buildings, including garment factories; strengthen the legislation enforcement; and look at how the UK can help to better enforce building standards, in collaboration with private sector and International Labour Organisation initiatives.
