Abducted boy rescued in Chittagong, two arrested

Update : 14 Jul 2013, 03:31 AM

The Rapid Action Battalion yesterday rescued a seven-year-old boy in Chittagong who had been abducted from the capital’s Jatrabari area 3 weeks ago.

Rab also arrested alleged kingpin Md Mamun and his associate Md Golap.

Md Imon, the victim, is the son of a readymade garment worker Jamal Hossain and his expat wife Laiju. He lived with his maternal grandparents in Jatrabari.

Sakhawat Hossain, assistant superintendent of police and operation officer of Rab 7, said Mamun had been a former colleague of Laiju in Lebanon and used to visit her parents occasionally when he returned home from there.

On June 20, Mamun went to Laiju’s residence and persuaded her parents to allow Imon to go for a spin around the city with him.

He then brought the boy in Chittagong and demanded Tk500,000.

The victim’s family filed a general diary with Jatrabari police station, which then informed the matter to Rab.

Meanwhile, Imon’s family convinced Mamun to reduce the ransom to Tk200,000.

On Friday, as previously planned, Mamun went to a bus counter near the city’s Alangkar intersection to accept the money.

Rab then arrested him at the spot around 12:30pm, after a tip-off from the family, and rescued Imon from a slum near Foy’s Lake.

During primary interrogation, Mamun said he had a “relationship” with Laiju and kidnapped her son to compel her to come back to him.

However, Laiju, returning home within a week of the abduction, refuted the allegation.
